High School Musical 3: Bigger is NOT better

Standard

Don’t you see that
Bigger is better
And better is bigger
A little bit is never enough. – I Want It All, Sharpay

Sorry Sharpay. Bigger is not always better.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year is big production-wise and definitely has an improved and more energetic dance choreography for which Kenny Ortega is well-known of. But the storyline is not cohesive. The whole movie is like a collage of production numbers in a TV variety show stitched up together to form a lame, cheesy story and some scenes are cut abruptly. Dubbing is poor and there are instances that Gabriella’s (Vanessa Hudgens) lips don’t sync with the music. Was it just the copy of the movie theater I went to? Maybe. Some production numbers are even Grease-like.

Practically, this third installment and big screen adaptation of the blockbuster Disney TV movie is a rehash of its two predecessors. But the character of Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is toned down and I hate it. Moreso, I hate the feature SE prodigy Tiara (Jemma Mckenzie-Brown) with an obviously trying hard British accent. And who is that Jimmie The Rocket Man? I despise the characterization of Matt Prokop but he’s cute (hehe).

On the other hand, why would Julliard waste time with a high school spring musical? I think the standards of the “pre-eminent” school for the performing arts is way higher than a high school musical extravaganza. I’m sure the tweeny voices of the cast will not pass. It’s a good thing they awarded the Julliard scholarships to the musical composer Kelsi (Olesya Rulin) whose character they have given importance to since the second installment and Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel) for the choreography.

I must believe now that the first is always better. What is in the movie is all there in the soundtrack. The difference is just the visual thing. But wait. Chad (Corbin Bleu) and Troy‘s (Zac Efron) production of The Boys Are Back is awesome. I think that part of the movie is outstanding. Great props and the energy of Corbin and Zac’s dancing is infectious.

I am not actually totally disappointed with HSM3. It is still entertaining to some extent and I think the music is better. And Zac Efron is bigger and buffed. 🙂

Currently, the movie is on top of the worldwide blockbuster list. Now that the Wildcats graduated from East High, would there be a homecoming? Toodles!

  1. Before I put up my own take on the movie, I have to say that I agree with most of your points. 🙂 Ashley Tisdale should have been the star of that movie.

  2. Yeah kerwin. Precisely. She’s FABULUS in 1 and 2. That Jemma stole what should be her spotlight. It’s not even clear why she was so tamed there except when you have watched her in 2.
