Paul Potts. The name sounds funny for us Filipinos but definitely a rising opera singing star, after winning the first series of ITV’s BGT (Britain’s Got Talent) competition. See more of him in his official website and in Wiki.
Since standing on the BGT’s stage for his first audition (video below), he has wowed his audience with his voice wherever he goes. And now he’s coming to Manila on October 8, 2008 at the PICC.
Paul has always been compared to the late Luciano Pavarotti. Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot has been one of Pavarotti’s trademark arias and Paul’s audition and BGT finals piece.
I have his debut album One Chance [Christmas Edition] (originally released on July 16, 2007 in UK) and has been sleeping in my iPod for months. I haven’t heard a single song from the album until the other night when I saw the TV ad for his concert here in Manila. They showed a clip of his first audition in BGT and he has blown me away with his rendition of Nessun Dorma. Weak as compared to Pavarotti’s version but Paul’s has heart. I think that’s what it makes him unique among the great tenors of the past and present (Russell Watson, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli). Although he has a lot more to work out when compared to the more well-known tenors of his time in terms of vocal technique, he is nevertheless great and that is something coming from a very amateur opera singer who has stopped singing since his accident in 2003 until he joined BGT in 2007.
I promise, he will make you cry.
