Hero: Live like we’re dying

Posted in A Can of Coke, Current Events, Kris Allen, Then and Now, Thoughts on January 8, 2010 by White

Yeah, we gotta start lookin’ at the hands of time we’ve been given
If this is all we got, then we gotta start thinkin’
If every second counts on a clock that’s tickin’
Gotta live live like we’re dying.

The refrain of the song (in fact, the song itself) Live Like We’re Dying by American Idol 2009 Kris Allen simply reminds us that we have to live our lives to the fullest. Every second counts.

Whatever happened to us in the year 2009 may inspire us to take a higher goal for our lives. Cliche as it may seem, 2009 has given us valuable lessons that we need not ignore. Let’s make the glories of our triumphs rule over the inequities and tragedies that struck us…and in any case, let’s all move on for the better and be the change that this country needs.

10. The Death of Michael Jackson
Fame and fortune is something almost everybody wants. Michael Jackson (well, he was nearly bankrupt before he died) had it all and he paid a great price for them. It’s not appalling to be famous and have all the money you want. We just not let them preside over our lives and yes, we have to be ready for the consequences.

9. When Susan Boyle dreamed a dream
Who ever expected that this unassuming spinster could sing? What Susan Boyle has achieved since she sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables in the Britain’s Got Talent 2009 auditions is unprecedented and has continued to greater heights when her debut album became a worldwide hit and a bestseller. Things are not always what they seem! So yes, if we only believe in ourselves and to always endeavor to be the best that we can be, all the stars in the heavens will align for us and that our dreams and aspirations will always be achieved.

8. The US in recession
From 2008 to 2009, the recession in the United States reverberated to the rest of the world and the Philippines was not spared.

7. The King of the Ring: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao
Who can be the best ambassador of the Philippines to the world other than Manny Pacquiao? Pacquiao saw the best time of his boxing career during the first decade of the millennium and closed it with being the greatest boxer of our time. Firstly, being always proud to be a Filipino and for always hoisting our flag above the rest are the things that we should be rejoicing because of Pacman. Secondly, Pacman served as manifestation of the Filipino indomitable spirit to rally against all odds. Thirdly, he can be called a “hero” since whenever he has a fight, criminality in the country is in its lowest, if nothing at all; the life of the Filipinos seems in a halt when Pacman is on the ring.

6. AH1N1
Was this some sort of a plague?! But of course, there is nothing that God will inflict on his people that they can’t prevail over. For a time being, fear for life ruled the country and the rest of the world because of the pandemic. Classes were suspended as majority of the cases in the country were from schools. Filipinos were fidgety over the outbreak and the seemingly slack response of the government. Ultimately, everything were contained.

5. Twitter and Facebook at the top of Social Networking
To Follow or Unfollow? To Friend or Unfriend? That is a looming question among us nowadays.

4. Maguindanao Massacre
All I can say with what happened is that justice should be served the soonest for the victims. Let’s all condemn and not allow this heinous crime to happen again.

3. The legacy of Cory Aquino
Tita Cory, as she is fondly called by almost all Filipinos, was instrumental to the ouster of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the restoration of constitutional democracy in the Philippines through the People Power Revolution. The best lesson I learned about the life of Tita Cory is to forget about one’s self and always think of other people. I hope our current government leaders will be inspired to follow the same principle and for all of us to emulate her life of simplicity and fear of God. [Thank you, Tita Cory (1933-2009)]

2. The Ondoy and Pepeng tragedies
With hundreds of lives and billions worth of properties lost and damaged, nothing can be compared to this tragedy in my thirty-plus years. But it is always a marvel at how Filipinos would unite, forget about their differences and cooperate with each other to help out the victims of the flooding.   That was the nicest story out of the said tragedy.

1. The Filipino as hero of the year
Efren Peñaflorida, a “pushcart teacher” was declared 2009 CNN Hero of the Year and what a better way to cap the year 2009 is but by the words of Efren himself upon accepting the honor:

“Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry. Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need. So to each and every person inside this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream, as I am the change that I dream, and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.”

UV Chorale soared high (against all odds)!

UV Chorale and Hiyas ng Pilipinas top MBC National Choral Competition

The University of the Visayas Chorale and Hiyas ng Pilipinas Children’s Choir scored stunning victories at last night’s grand finals of the MBC National Choral Competition, held at the Aliw Theater in Pasay.

Audience favorite UV, conducted by Anna Abeleda Piquero edged out a powerful St Louis University Glee Club by a hairline, with De La Salle’s Coro Animo and Makati City’s Koro Ilustrado rounding up the top four finishers.

It was the third-straight victory for Hiyas ng Pilipinas, who reprised their debut win at Paskong Pinoy in 2007 by topping Vox Angeli anew. AUP Young Voices and Calasiao Children’s Chorus, both title-holders at the World Choir Games, came in third and fourth respectively.

Arriving by boat just the day before — with three of its members sadly falling prey to holduppers at the pier — the ensemble from Cebu showed Visayan spunk, rolling out humorous and vocally flawless performances that earned the admiration of audiences two nights in a row. It was also an amazing double-win by the flashy and talented conductor-arranger Anna Piquero, who likewise steered erstwhile top-seed Koro Ilustrado to fourth place, as she delivered the finest conducting chops seen on this side of the musical world.

Bittersweet would best describe Hiyas ng Pilipinas’ victory, whose title defense was wracked with a lot of indecision on the part of its handlers Manila Dance Foundation. Delivering what jury chair Jonathan Velasco termed as a “perfect moment” on the competition piece Payapang Daigdig, Hiyas conductor Nick Infante remained speechless backstage, as he struggled to comprehend all that happened. With a number of their choristers soon turning fifteen, Hiyas is going into a brief hiatus as a children’s choir to train new members, but is expected to become a regular fixture in special events of the corporate world, where they proudly proclaim their MBC Paskong Pinoy titles. Already, they are favorite performers within diplomatic circles and even scored a bronze against adult choirs in the sacred music category of the recent CCP International Choral Competition.

According to Velasco, president of the Philippine Choral Directors Association, the MBC event is now “the choral competition to aspire to in the Philippines” as manifested by the participation of the best choral conductors and arrangers in the country, most of whom come from the ranks of the Philippine Madrigal Singers. He foresees increased interest and participation of PCDA members in next year’s contest.

Velasco and his fellow jurors Fidel Calalang Jr of the UST Conservatory of Music, Arnel De Pano of the San Miguel Master Chorale, Sebastian Trinidad of the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir, and Moy Ortiz of The Company unanimously agreed that MBC’s programme delivery gives choirs a lot of self-worth, while helping to condition the minds of mass audiences that choral music makes for public entertainment.

So proud of our (Koro Ilustrado) little bros and sis from UV Chorale!

SOS to ‘Ondoy” Victims

Posted in Current Events, Photos, Random with tags , , on September 28, 2009 by White

I was just lucky to have my day off at work last Saturday when the tropical storm ‘Ondoy’ (international code name: Ketsana) slashed through the east part of Metro Manila and some parts of Northern and Central Luzon. News about flooding and how the Marikina City, Cainta and Pasig residents were trapped with no food and water at the roofs of their flood water-submerged home, some 100 lives were already lost and/or still missing as of this writing and other properties were damaged. My heart and prayers goes out to the victims. Let’s help them in whatever ways we can.

Here are ways for you to help:

The millions of Mikey Arroyo

Posted in Current Events with tags , on September 2, 2009 by White

This is really a media suicide and this circumstance could lead to a thorough investigation.

Obviously, Rep. Mikey Arroyo, the son of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is lying about his wealth. This is really sad, not for Mikey, but for the country.

What do you think?

Manila Bulletin blunder: Plain idiocy or intentional?

Posted in Current Events, Photos, Random with tags on August 6, 2009 by White

Is this just a plain oversight? Where were the editors? No proofreading done with the caption made for the following photo? Was it intentional? Or plain idiocy on the part of the editors?

One could not anymore find this photo in the Manila Bulletin’s website. I’m sure MB also recalled the supplement that came with today’s (August 6, 2009) issue of the daily.

As of this writing, I still haven’t heard of any reactions from the Arroyo’s camp.

“I was very privileged and really blessed with so many material and spiritual gifts that I should give back, … I should do something for my people, but … it’s not just in politics that you can be a servant of the people, you can do it in so many other ways.”

“You have spent many lives and much treasure to bring freedom to many lands that were reluctant to receive it. And here you have a people who won it by themselves and need only the help to preserve it.”

“I am not embarrassed to tell you that I believe in miracles.”

“I don’t have any formula for ousting a dictator or building democracy. All I can suggest is to forget about yourself and just think of your people. It’s always the people who make things happen.”

“As I came to power peacefully, so shall I keep it.”

“I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.”
